Chester Arnold's "digger"

I chose the piece “Digger” by Chester Arnold. This piece has a man sitting in a grave with tree stumps surrounding him. The grave that the man is sitting in was dug by himself for himself; he dug it because he feels that he has done the wrong thing by helping with cutting down the trees. I believe the man dug the grave for himself because he feels if the trees don’t deserve to live and he had some fault in them being cut down he doesn’t deserve to live.
I believe that Chester Arnold’s intent for this piece is even if you’re one of the people cutting down the trees you still have a heart and still feel bad for these trees being cut down, or just a person that pretends not to care about the trees, deep down inside that person has to feel bad or sad about the trees. As Chester Arnold once said about forests “and whenever one is felled I feel a pang of remorse. Something wonderful – environmentally and spiritually – has been taken away.” As you can probably tell by his statement Chester Arnold loves the environment and feels that cutting down forests to build more buildings and more cities is very wrong and he doesn’t approve of it.
I chose this piece because the man sitting in the grave really caught my attention. I was thinking to myself why would this man be sitting in a grave surrounded by tree stumps, after I read the description of the piece and found out why the man was sitting in the grave made me even more interested in the piece. It made me want to stand there and just look at and think about the piece even more. As I stood there thinking about the piece it hit me that Chester Arnold is right about all the forests being cut down (that its wrong). That’s why I chose this piece by Chester Arnold.
